Picture of an online mahjong game

Have you ever played mahjong? I am not talking about the mahjong solitaire game where you match two pairs of tiles that have the same design. I am talking about the four-person game that is fun, loved by many, and played around the world. There are versions of the game that let you play mahjong online. It is a great way to learn how to play the game, get comfortable with different styles of play, and play with players from around the world.

Mahjong Parties

Growing up, my family hosted mahjong parties that went on for several hours. We served tea, dinner, and late-night snacks. We spent days preparing in advance to host these mahjong parties. It took a lot of time, effort, and energy to organize these events. They were a tremendous amount of fun and in turn, our community hosted mahjong parties at their homes.

Mahjong Online

Fast forward to today, there are 600,000,000 mahjong players worldwide. The game is also played online. Numerous platforms offer different versions of mahjong on desktop, phone, and tablet. The games are offered in different languages and styles of play.

How does mahjong online compare to playing in person? It has a different feel, and play is at a different pace than playing in person. In person, you socialize more with the players sitting around the table. You may vary your speed of play a bit, pausing at those times when you need more time to think. Online, you don’t socialize very much as there are a lot of actions you are paying attention to. The online version was really impactful for many in recent years. During Covid, many people became lonely, craving the socialization they were accustomed to. The availability of 24/7 online games really helped to ease loneliness and isolation.

All Pong Hand Demonstration

I posted this video demonstrating how to make an All Pong Hand online. The platform in my video is MahjongTime which offers beginners to the game a practice area to play against bots. As you progress, you can play for fun against other players. The level of game play can be easy to more difficult depending on the type of game you choose.
